The complete guide to IELTS preparation. Learn about test format, scoring system, study strategies, and how to create an effective study plan for your target band score.

What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration. Over 3.5 million tests are taken each year worldwide.

IELTS assesses your English skills across four key areas: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It is recognized by over 11,000 organizations globally, including universities, employers, and immigration authorities.

IELTS Test Format

Academic vs General Training

IELTS comes in two versions: Academic (for university admission) and General Training (for immigration and work). Both tests include the same Listening and Speaking sections but differ in Reading and Writing.

Listening (30 minutes)

4 sections, 40 questions. Same for Academic and General Training.

Reading (60 minutes)

3 passages, 40 questions. Academic uses longer, complex texts.

Writing (60 minutes)

2 tasks. Academic: graph description + essay. General: letter + essay.

Speaking (11-14 minutes)

3 parts: interview, long turn, discussion. Same for both versions.

IELTS Scoring System

IELTS uses a 9-band scoring system. Each of the four sections is scored individually, and your overall band score is the average. Most universities require Band 6.0-7.0 for admission, while immigration programs may require Band 4.0-7.0 depending on the category.

Band Score Descriptors

  • Band 9: Expert user - fully operational command of English
  • Band 8: Very good user - fully operational with occasional inaccuracies
  • Band 7: Good user - operational command with occasional problems
  • Band 6: Competent user - generally effective command despite inaccuracies
  • Band 5: Modest user - partial command, can handle basic communication
